《볼 수 있는 것과 말할 수 있는 것 사이》 는 광주의 일상 속에서 병원의 기능을 이미 오래전에 상실하고 잊혀진 공간인 (구)국군광주병원을 광주 출신이거나 광주 지역을 기반으로 활동하는 12명의 작가와 다시 찾는다. 병원을 일시적으로 점유하며 그들은 우리가 볼 수 있는 것과 보이지만 애써 외면하려 했던 것, 말할 수 있는 것과 차마 소리 내어 말하지 못한 침묵 사이의 연결성에 주목한다. 5·18의 역사와 기억, 아픔과 치유, 폭력과 저항이 공존하는 장소이자 의료 공간으로써 이 곳은 각 작품의 서사에서 애도나 치유의 대상이 되기도 하고, 주인공이자 배경이 되기도 하며, 사유의 소재가 되기도 한다. 결과적으로 5·18민주화운동은 박제된 과거가 아닌, 오늘 일상에서 마주한 ‘가능성의 역사’로 소환시키도록 돕는다. 이번 전시는 5·18민주화운동 특별전《메이투데이》프로젝트의 일환으로 기획되었다.

Between the Seen and the Spoken revisits the Former Armed Force’s Gwangju Hospital, a site which has been left forgotten during…. Temporarily overtaking the building’s vacant spaces, the artists give shapes to what we can see, or could see, but tried to turn a blind eye. They give voices to the things we can speak about, or things we could articulate, yet kept in silence. The hospital is a site where traces of history and memory, pain and recovery, violence and resistance overlap. Highlighting these textural residues of the site, each work variously appropriates the hospital as a subject of mourning and cure; a protagonist and a backdrop; a topic of interrogation. Therefore, the exhibition commemorates the May 18 Democratization Movement not as an irrevocable event of the past, but as a ‘possibility’ that enables us to imagine a ‘potential history’ from today’s standpoint. This exhibition has been organized as part of the May 18 Democratization Movement Special Exhibition MaytoDay.
